Theoretically, PLA is a bioplastic with low crystallinity (the lower the crystallinity of the material, the easier it is for the microorganisms responsible for biodegradation to chemically decompose the material), and it is much easier to degrade than petroleum-based plastics. However, due to the addition of other ingredients, the simultaneous polymerization process will increase the crystallinity. These factors will lengthen the degradation time of PLA.

However, PLA degradation needs to meet the following conditions:

1. A large number of microorganisms;

2. When the temperature exceeds 30°C, microorganisms will begin to degrade PLA;

3. Humidity. The higher the humidity, the higher the hydrolysis efficiency.

Environments that meet these several conditions at the same time can be said to be very rare in nature. At present, many of the world's leading countries in environmental protection and plastic bans, such as Europe, no longer use degradation and complete degradation to describe materials, but use whether they are compostable or not. Because compostability can limit the degradation time, the particle size after degradation, and the impact of the degraded components on plant growth, to ensure the safety of the material. Therefore, truly environmentally friendly tableware that can be completely degraded under home composting conditions, such as pulp molded tableware and plant fiber molded tableware (sugar cane pulp tableware), is now showing a hot development trend in the market.
